IntroductionWith such a huge expansion of the herptile hobby today, breeding is inevitable. It has been said that, “the prevailing attitude seems to be that breeding a species is the only possible reason for keeping the species in the first place.” Tom Mazorlig – Success With a Reptile Pet, Bearded Dragon.Small-scale private breeders are becoming more abundant as detailed information on keeping and breeding is becoming increasingly available. Sometimes the hardest part is to get reptiles to mate mate, but because there are more than enough easy to breed reptile species available, the determining factor between success and failure is becoming the incubator.Building your own incubator is probably not such a big deal anymore. Because it is a cheap step in the reproduction chain (for example hatching of the actual babies), it is not always easy to get the desired, to the point information on how to build your own. Experience has taught me even if you, without hesitation, tell people how to build their own incubator they become sceptical and tend not to believe you that easily. The incubator mentioned in this publication is only to be used for colubrids and the mentioned lizard eggs. These eggs are semi-permeable and flexible and absorb water from their environment throughout the embryonal development stages. Most of the species’ eggs which can be incubated with the method mentioned in this eBook are mentioned in the “Average Incubation Temperatures For Commonly Kept Reptiles” section. Python, some gecko and hard-shelled (i.e. bird) eggs need different preparation and incubation environments than those mentioned here. For successful incubation of these eggs see The Advanced Reptile Incubator Manual. An important consideration before breeding any reptile species is the demand for the animals. Worldwide there are a lot of large-scale breeders, which flood local markets with various species. It is important to do some market research before breeding, or even purchasing any new animal with the main purpose of breeding. This Basic Reptile Incubator Manual takes the reader through the whole process of incubation - from the preparation stages until after the babies have hatched. I have tried to discuss most of the appropriate aspects within each section. This edition of this eBook has instructions for a smaller, compact, more practical incubator as a basic model to build upon.I would like to express my gratitude towards Pierré Gouws and Mariana Koekemoer who helped to proofread the final version of this edition. Your help is really appreciated! My gratitude also goes to all my recent book and website readers for all their questions and insight on the topic – you have helped to make this book more informative for future readers!
